Black Men's Initiative Main Content
The Black Men’s Initiative is an endeavor of Southern Illinois University (SIU) that seeks to meet the academic, professional, and cultural needs of black male students on campus. BMI, in collaboration with the Black Resource Center and the Center for Inclusive Excellence (programs that were established to honor SIU’s long tradition of diversity and multicultural education), seeks to create a positive SIU environment and academic experience to address the needs of black male students.
Black Men's Initiative is dedicated to helping young black males successfully navigate through the college experience. The charge of this initiative for black males is to purposefully and intentionally promote their success as students at Southern Illinois University. The program employs proven and effective strategies to improve African American male student engagement, retention, and graduation rates by providing events and services such as:
